A multicultural farewell to King Harald V

    I Came as a Foreigner

When I came to Norway, I was a foreigner. I carried another land in my memory, another culture in my bones, another story in my name. And you were the King. I did not know then how many winters I would see here, how many times Norway would test me, teach me, challenge me, and slowly become a place I could call home. But through those changing years, you were there. Not in my house. Not at my table. Not beside me when the road was difficult. Yet somehow, you were there. A familiar face above a changing nation. A quiet reminder that Norway was more than laws, more than institutions, more than passports and the question: Where do you really come from? I came from somewhere else, Your Majesty.

    Two Worlds, One Heart

But I lived here. I struggled here. I hoped here. I raised my voice here. And eventually, I learned to belong here. I watched Norway wrestle with immigration. I watched laws change. I watched integration change. I watched immigrants themselves change. And I changed too. Sometimes I questioned this country. Sometimes I disagreed with it. Sometimes I wondered whether there would ever be enough room for people carrying two worlds inside one heart.

What I Learned from a King

But through the years I learned something from the Royal Family: That disagreement does not have to become hatred. That dignity does not need arrogance. That strength does not require humiliation. That we can listen without judging. That we can protect the vulnerable without asking first for their surname, their birthplace, their religion, their accent, or the colour of their skin. And perhaps most importantly: That a nation becomes greater, not when everyone becomes the same, but when different people learn how to belong to one another. King Harald, you were King when I arrived. Today, I am here to watch you leave. And I cannot pretend that this farewell does not hurt. For somewhere between the foreigner who arrived and the person standing here today, your Norway also became a little bit my Norway. So I mourn you. Not because I was born beneath your Crown. But because I lived beneath it. Not because my ancestors knew your ancestors. But because my journey crossed your reign. And that is enough for gratitude.

A Final Farewell and a New Beginning

    King Harald,

When I came to Norway, you were the King.

I arrived carrying the memories of another homeland, never knowing how deeply this country would eventually become part of my own story.

Through the years, your reign accompanied that journey.

For that, I will always carry gratitude.

Today, I say farewell with sadness, but also with a heart filled with respect.

May you now rest peacefully, beyond the burdens of age and pain.

To our new King Haakon VIII and Queen Mette-Marit:

I remember witnessing your marriage and following your journey through the years.

As you begin this new chapter in Norway's history, I extend my heartfelt wishes to you both.

May your reign be guided by wisdom, humility, compassion and respect.

May you find strength in one another, remain close to the people, and carry forward the values and traditions entrusted to you.

May your journey together be beautiful, meaningful and filled with purpose.

To Queen Sonja and the entire Royal Family, my deepest condolences.

    And to our departed King:

Gone but not forgotten, always in our hearts.

Rest in eternal peace, King Harald V.

    Hvil i fred, Kong Harald.

    Takk for reisen.
